For many years, George Lakoff has been asking the Democrats to beat the GOP at the “frame game.”  Here he provides not only the frame but also the rationale for it. It is a long read, but well worth the time because it’s all about the frame!

A Minority President: Why the Polls Failed, And What the Majority Can Do

in Political

  1. The American Majority

Hillary Clinton won the majority of votes in this year’s presidential election.

The loser, for the majority of voters, will now be a minority president-elect. Don’t let anyone forget it. Keep referring to Trump as the minority president, Mr. Minority and the overall Loser. Constant repetition, with discussion in the media and over social media, questions the legitimacy of the minority president to ignore the values of the majority. The majority, at the very least, needs to keep its values in the public eye and view the minority president’s action through majority American values.

The polls failed and the nation needs to know why. The pollsters and pundits have not given a satisfactory answer.

I will argue that the nature of mind is not a mere technical issue for the cognitive and brain sciences, but that it had everything to do with the outcome of the 2016 election — and the failure of the pollsters, the media, and Democrats to predict it. They were not alone. The public needs to understand better how the human mind works in general — but especially in politics. There is a lot to know. Let us go step by step.

Hillary Clinton made a major policy speech yesterday.  She’s running for president of the United States.  Every time she opens her mouth – and she has a pretty mouth that says smart things that some people sometimes dislike – somebody has something to say about how she sounds.  Seems it is never “just right.”

This popped up in my newsfeed which pretty concisely packages the issue.

03/23/2016 06:09 pm ET

I don’t know.  What does Hillary Clinton have to do to get it “just right?”  To  get anything just right? Personally, I was worried about how her poor voice would hold up, it had suffered such abuse these past weeks on the campaign trail.  It held up fine, and for my money her tenor was fine.  When Hillary gives policy speeches, she generally is calm and deliberate.  I have watched many over the past eight years since I began keeping track of her secretary of state tenure. That is her policy speech style.  I don’t even want to go into that.  Paige Lavender did the topic justice.  But what does Hillary have to do to get things “just right?”  More to the point, why does she have to?

Everybody has something to say about what she wears, how she sounds, how she looks.  Wear that yellow for the speech.  No!  Oh!  Not that awful yellow!  Be forceful!  Oh no!  Don’t yell.  Smile more!

Why can’t Hillary just be Hillary?  Why can’t the most qualified person ever to run in my life (Harry Truman began as a haberdasher – youngsters, just go google it –  I’m too tired – he was the first to run in my life) have a fair chance to spell out her plans without everybody talking about her tone, facial expression, and whatever other third element hits the windshield of the armchair quarterbacks.

When Hillary and I were in college, Marshall McLuhan (go look him up – I am tired of spoonfeeding voting age people) said the “medium is the message.”  He meant medium as print v. video.  So video is the message today, even though I still like to get my hands on transcripts and lift the passages I think are important. Video – and audio – are the whole show.

I know I am biased.  But WTF??????? What is so offensive about Hillary that Bernie’s foghorn and gesticulating, Ted’s cartoon voice, John’s bedtime story voice, and Trump’s bellowing (“Get ‘im out!”) fail to surpass in offensiveness, condescension, plain old annoyance?

Why is her wardrobe an issue?  They all look like a suit rack at the cleaners.  Why, when she puts forward the only sane. thought-out, and comprehensive plan to combat terrorism is anything other than her words and her plan an issue?

It really never entered my mind that we would have a woman president. I loved Shirley Chisholm.  She sat them all down like she was the detention teacher in the halls of Congress. Pat Schroeder gave it her best, and Gerri Ferraro made me proud coming within a margin of being a heartbeat away.  But this was never a goal.

It’s just that right now we have the best candidate I have ever seen.  She happens to be a woman with a message, a set of plans, and a way of explaining things. She’s not hard to look at, not hard to listen to, and, when you bother to listen, not hard to understand –  she explains well.

Why can’t Hillary get it just right?  Or is it that the chairs keep getting moved around while the music blares?

02-13-14-Y-02Why don’t the guys have to be pitch perfect?  Why don’t they even have to pitch it over home base, actually, as long as they throw?

Thank you Hillary Clinton for running for president when you didn’t have to.  Thank you for your plans, your brilliance, and for always being right on target while looking pretty and being your spunky and empathetic self. Your Homegirls love you!

Secretary Kerry released the 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report today.  Coinciding with the release came this story.

‘Sea Slaves’: Forced Labor for Cheap Fish

By IAN URBINA
  • Cambodian migrants hauled in the nets on a fishing boat in the South China Sea. A labor shortage in the Thai fishing industry is primarily filled by using migrants, mostly from Cambodia and Myanmar.
  • The living quarters on the fishing boats are typically cramped and the men sleep for short periods between hours of work.
  • San Oo, 35, was trafficked into Thailand from Myanmar and sold to a fishing boat. He was forced to work at sea for two and a half years.
  • Migrant workers unloaded barrels of fish at the docks in Songkhla. "Motherships" bring the catch to shore so that the trawlers can stay at sea.The crew on the Thai fishing boat included two dozen Cambodian boys, some as young as 15.

SONGKHLA, Thailand — Lang Long’s ordeal began in the back of a truck. After watching his younger siblings go hungry because their family’s rice patch in Cambodia could not provide for everyone, he accepted a trafficker’s offer to travel across the Thai border for a construction job.It was his chance to start over. But when he arrived, Mr. Long was kept for days by armed men in a room near the port at Samut Prakan, more than a dozen miles southeast of Bangkok. He was then herded with six other migrants up a gangway onto a shoddy wooden ship. It was the start of three brutal years in captivity at sea.

“I cried,” said Mr. Long, 30, recounting how he was resold twice between fishing boats. After repeated escape attempts, one captain shackled him by the neck whenever other boats neared.

Mr. Long’s crews trawled primarily for forage fish, which are small and cheaply priced. Much of this catch comes from the waters off Thailand, where Mr. Long was held, and is sold to the United States, typically for canned cat and dog food or feed for poultry, pigs and farm-raised fish that Americans consume.

The political division at the New York Times has come under scrutiny and criticism in the past several days for faulty and inaccurate reporting about disagreement between the intelligence community and the State Department on classification guidelines.  This particular story, from a different division, seems pretty well documented.

We are accustomed to stories of women, especially young women and girls, being sold or kidnapped and held in sex trade bondage, but we hear precious little about other forms of modern human trafficking and slavery.

Clearly we need to feed our pets and livestock.  We do not need to do so on the backs of unpaid hostages in an unregulated industry.  It remains a mystery to me why some (men), when Hillary Clinton raised this banner,  called it a “soft” issue.  There is nothing soft about slavery.

Did Hillary Pass the New York Times’ Feminist Test?

Hillary Clinton enough of a feminist, hillary clinton and feminists

All together the essays I read showed a range of ages and opinions circling one idea – “Is Hillary a good enough feminist?” Funny. I didn’t realize Hillary was running for Feminist. I thought she was running for President.

Brand. Images of multinational corporations form in my head when I see that word. We have barely noticed that the word brand has slipped into our lexicon to assist us when we describe ourselves and our beliefs. It’s shocking. Brands sell products. They are trademarked. A brand is also burned into the skin of an animal to mark ownership. It can’t be undone and it never changes.

Remember the phrase “corporations are people” from the 2012 presidential debate? It was more insightful than many care to believe.

Some may remember Gloria Grahame adorably performing this number in the movie Oklahoma.

When she appeared with Seth Meyers in April, 2015,  Dame Helen Mirren irresistibly declared her love for Vin Diesel and her strong desire to be in a Fast & Furious movie.

Vin received her message and has responded because…  you know … when The Queen of Broadway expresses a strong desire,  it behooves you to reply.

Vin Diesel Would Welcome Helen Mirren To ‘Furious 8’: I Love Her

June 24, 2015

OK, there’s been enough back and forth about Dame Helen Mirren wanting to join “Furious 8” – let’s get those contracts signed already!

A few months back, the Oscar winner said she’s dying to star in the hit franchise, and Vin Diesel said he’s ready to welcome Helen into the “Furious” family.

“I love Helen Mirren. Get your act together, Helen!” he told Access Hollywood at the opening of the “Fast & Furious – Supercharged” ride at Universal Studios on Tuesday, echoing an interview Helen gave in March in which she told Vin to get his act together and find her a role. “I love you!”

On April 12, 2015, Hillary Clinton declared that she wants to be the champion for Americans and American families.

As much as I love Vin Diesel myself, I must admit that I have not watched a Fast & Furious movie but look forward to Dame Helen demonstrating her outstanding driving and sharp-shooting skills in the next one.

I also look forward to seeing Hillary Clinton tackle the issues she has been laying out on the campaign trail.

When you have two such accomplished women asking you to hire them to do the job they can do best,  how can you say “no?”

I can’t!  I can’t say no!

I hope you can’t either.  We can’t vote for Helen to be in Fast & Furious, but we can  help Hillary become the champion for all of us that we know she can be in the White House.

VOLUNTEER

By the way, Helen is on her side, and Hillary had a rare chance in her busy schedule to see Helen perform in the limited engagement of The Audience on Broadway.  That will be but a fond memory in a few days.  There isn’t a single ticket left.

When Independence Day arrives, I am going to be missing our Broadway Queen of Hearts most heartily.  No one can do that role like Dame Helen,  and she has said that she will never play that part again.

I really need to get on the stick,  though, because Chelsea Clinton says Fast &  Furious movies are great!  Like Hillary,  I trust her judgment.

You have to ask yourself why God would have instituted love at all and incorporated it in the human makeup (and possibly – probably –  also that of other animals).  We could have been created devoid any emotions at all.  Why give us love?  Why did God do that to us?

Since we have it, why does man do this,  especially to a family member, a daughter,  who should be loved instead of being seen as chattel?  Why to an unborn, innocent, loved and wanted child?

There is a human right to love.  God gave us the capacity.  It was intentional and is a mystery.  That right to love, whomever, must be respected and protected.  No one and no government or religion should ever stand against anyone’s God-given right to love.

Pregnant Pakistani woman stoned to death by family

Associated Press

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — A pregnant woman was stoned to death Tuesday by her own family outside a courthouse in the Pakistani city of Lahore for marrying the man she loved.

The woman was killed while on her way to court to contest an abduction case her family had filed against her husband. Her father was promptly arrested on murder charges, police investigator Rana Mujahid said, adding that police were working to apprehend all those who participated in this “heinous crime.”

Arranged marriages are the norm among conservative Pakistanis, and hundreds of women are murdered every year in so-called honor killings carried out by husbands or relatives as a punishment for alleged adultery or other illicit sexual behavior.
