Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
May 27, 2009

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, we are absolutely delighted and obviously, relieved to have Roxana home safely, to have her parents here with us. This was a matter of great concern to our country, certainly to the Obama Administration, to me personally, not only as Secretary of State, but as a mother. And my heart went out to Roxana and to her parents every single day.
We are just grateful now that she is free and is able to be back in this country. There were so many people who were working on her behalf, praying for her, speaking out all over the world. And it’s just a great moment for me to welcome you here.
MS. SABERI: Thank you very much. I want to take this opportunity to again thank the American people, President Obama, you, Secretary of State Clinton, and your Department, as well as many others around the world for the support they gave me during the past few months, and for the work they did to push for my release.
When I found out that I had the support while I was in prison, I gained a lot of strength and hope and I didn’t feel so alone anymore. It’s wonderful to be back in the United States. I’m very proud to be an American, just as I’m proud of my Japanese and Iranian heritage. It’s wonderful to be back. Thank you. Thank you so much.
SECRETARY CLINTON: Thank you all very much. Thank you all very much.

PRN: 2009/511

Hillary received Roxana along with her parents today at the State Department. Efforts world-wide to obtain Roxana’s release, not the least of which came from Hillary Clinton herself, paid off. Now, let’s get organized to agitate for the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee from North Korea!

Hillary is a huge “get” for any graduating class. This year, she stuck close to her Chappaqua home to receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from NYU and an award from Barnard College. She was the keynote speaker at both commencement ceremonies. This particular speech given this past Monday, May 18 at Barnard is of particular interest for The Department of Homegirl Security for several reasons:

1. Hillary speaks completely for herself and makes NO MENTION of the Obama administration. It is clear she is addressing her own ideas, issues, philosophies, and lifelong causes.

2. She does so at a (traditionally) Women’s college (even though there are now men also at Barnard).

3. The women you see here – all of them and the men – including Nick Kristof – whom Hillary mentions in this speech – are part of the Homegirl Security front. They are our comrades in arms against all of the sexism and misogyny we have encountered in our lives and watched other women, Hillary included, experience.

GO CLASS OF 2009! AND GO HILLARY! ALWAYS!

It was a great relief to hear this news this morning.  As our Secretary of State mentioned, this story is not over, but Roxana is free to go home with her parents.  Let’s not forget about Laura and Euna.
