Given the stated mission of this Department, a few events of the past few days require some comment.
Reports that Carolyn Maloney will challenge Kirsten Gillibrand for the Senate seat vacated by Homegirl-in-Chief, Hillary Rodham Clinton emerged. Now for two strong, accomplished Homegirls to be competing for a seat once occupied by the incomparable HRC might seem the best of all possible worlds. But, evidently, not so fast, girls!
Lets take two steps back. Both names (along with others) were floated when Hillary decided to accept Secretary of State. Many would have been happy with either one given the other prominent female name out there, the stunningly inarticulate Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. In the end, Governor Paterson picked Kirsten, but everybody involved knew that this seat would be up for grabs again and the occupant would have to fight for it.
Now the way these things usually work is that the incumbent decides whether or not to run again and challengers declare themselves and we, the voters, listen and decide who to vote for. Usually. But way back in May, this story and its disturbing implications came up from AnnieNYC. She tells it so well. Obama, the White House, interfering in NY State politics – um -you know – like he did when he told Paterson to put Princess Caroline in that seat.
Well, as we see in Annie’s blog post, Israel did back down in compliance with the wishes of The One and Only. The White House exhaled palpably.
Then, this week those annoying little tweets on Hillary-compliant Twitter (yes, they delayed maintenance because she asked them to for Iran protesters to have a line of communication – I love it) first claiming that none other than Bill Clinton himself will head up a fundraiser for – are you ready? – Carolyn Maloney to challenge Kirsten Gillibrand for that Senate seat Hillary once graced. What? You ask. Didn’t she read Annie’s blog? Doesn’t she KNOW that the White House annointed Kirsten? And BILL! What is THIS about? Defying your wife’s – um – boss? (I get hives writing that).
Well, early posts in some PUMA quarters claimed that this was a mere formality based on Bill’s promise to raise funds for anyone who supported the Love-Of-His-Life and our beloved Homegirl-in-Chief. A spokesperson for Bill says Bill will not take sides in this. But wait! Charlie Rangel will! Gerri Ferraro will!
And why on earth should Carolyn NOT run? Well, I hear there has been a call from the White House – from Joe Biden. I don’t know if the WH liaisons such as Biden and Emmanuel are empowered to offer some kind of compensation for compliance with the wishes of the On High.
Clearly Carolyn has said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” And Charlie Rangel, to whom we are forever grateful for having lured one Hillary Rodham Clinton (whom he refers to as “My Girlfriend” – I love Charlie) to the Great State of New York in the first place, once again puts himself in the Rebel Camp against the Obama machine. Momma Nancy is going to be mad and once again threaten to spank! Personally, I think Charlie can stand up to all of them, just like Carolyn.
So let’s have a fair fight between the Homegirls. Democracy is often messy. We like it that way!
Before closing, and this will be VERY short, the other breaking news immediately preceding Independence Day was the news of Sarah Palin’s resignation as Governor of Alaska. Was there abuse by pundits, press, comedians, etc. of Sarah and her family? Yes. Did the recent dust-up with Letterman precipitate this monumental overreaction? Perhaps. Is this her move toward the national stage? Personally, I do not see how on earth it COULD be!
What about this action is supposed to inspire confidence in her as a public servant? Well, I suppose I am hardened and unsympathetic, and jaded. And I know, I know The Department of Homegirl Security is supposed to defend sisters in distress.
But, you see, THE Homegirl, The Head Honcho Homegirl, the H Homegirl on the bumper sticker that still graces my car, she taught us all something about sticking the way that sticker sticks to my car. She was treated HORRIBLY by her own party and by Main Stream Media over a year and a half while she pursued her candidacy. I cannot, being a Hillary Clinton Homegirl, understand how QUITTING an elected post after two years in any way enhances someone’s public image as any kind of candidate or why this should encourage my support or defense of the action or the person.
To those who ask “Will Hillary be next?” HA! Hillary has a lot of work to do at the State Department and the world is in a mess on several fronts. So I ask back, “Why SHOULD she or WOULD she?” Nonsense!
You are talking about Hillary Clinton – you know, the firecracker, the one who hangs in there!

As for Carolyn vs. Kirsten, I’ll go with Carolyn, hands down. I never really understood what made Kirsten so special other than her moderate-conservative bona fides made her attractive to the upstate folks. But then again, I’m a liberal so that’s probably why Kirsten never excited me all that much.

Stacey that video where palin goes after hillary was posted at the confluence and a poster there said it was just advice. You know hillary supporters and other dems are trying to make that tape go viral. They wanted to post it on palin’s facebook page and tweet it to her. That video is at du,daily kos, wonkette, crooks and liars, and ben smith’s blog. To me it is sad when I have to go to sites like daily kos to find that tape and support for hillary, but cannot post it at so-called hillary sites.

jillforhill- I’m glad to hear someone else is absolutely perplexed (and annoyed) at how some Hillary supporters seem to think Sarah Palin=Hillary. I don’t get it, never got it- they are apples and oranges as far as I’m concerned. I just don’t see it- they are as different ideologically as two politicians can be.

That she could even say what she did, *out loud*, tells me what I knew the moment John McCain cynically picked her to be his running mate- she’s a narcissistic, unprepared, ideological extremist who didn’t even know enough about national and international policy to know that she was NOT qualified for the position she was running for [Veep]. Recent history, I don’t know when buffalo boy became a super moderator but I trace most of the changes at HV to that weekend meltdown. I do not cease to be amazed at which members are coming out for Palin.
Now I am trying to go back a whole year in my mind to remember how some of this played out. Last July I was at Conflu a lot and NQ and PumaPAC often. I was also listening to BTR – No We Won’t. If you were also at those places, you can help me remember – although I probably recorded some of this at A Rose for Hillary. Didn’t Heidi Li Feldman contact Obama’s team and ask for a woman VP nominee? She did not even get through to “himself” and was told, “No you can’t have that.” Then she contacted McCain and he did see her and she made the same request and he said he would think about it.
That was the beginning, for some PUMAs, of the notion that the DNC was deaf to us and the RNC was not. I started drifting away from Conflu/NQ/Pumapac during the GE because already there were people who were pissed at Hillary who was simply doing what she said she would do. That’s when I started this, and also started spending my nights at My Two Cents which was on just about every night back then. They were the folks who introduced me to HV, and since I started going there I stopped going to the other sites, but I see the same pattern throughout the pumasphere.
1. There are PUMAs who are in this movement for the power and control – they are scary! I don’t believe they really ever had Hillary in their sights – she was a vehicle for them. So jillforhill is right on target with her trade-in comment. They continue to try to drive this movement, and, imo are also responsible for the shattering we are seeing.
2. There are Republicans who pretend to be PUMAs to bring pissed off Dems to their party. Some people have told me that they changed their registration after the election. I think some Dems WERE dragged over the line, and also think some were Repubs all along.
3. There are the feminists. Some have become rabidly militant since the election cycle. Some have become blinded. Some are using the word “sexist” the same way the Obama camp used the word “racist.” Once we saw via Rachel Maddow and Campbell Brown that it was possible to be sexist even if you are a woman, well -this group went to town and they are still throwing that word around like overripe tomatoes.
4. There are the “supporters.” The ones who sent money and felt they had an investment in Hillary and got pissed off when she walked out on that convention floor. Some of these went as far as to ask for their money back.
5. There are the sincere Hillary loyalists (that is the word I am using now as opposed to “supporter”). These are the folks we saw in “The Hillary I Know” videos. People for whom Hillary has quietly and resolutely worked out of the limelight over the years in the Senate. These are very sweet people. Some of them are caught in the middle of this firestorm and I feel terrible for them. Some DM me at HV, and I feel, out of loyalty to them, that I need to be careful not to be banned over there.
6. There are “girls like me.” I saw her declare and, based on what I knew of her work, was all for her in a very happy, positive way. She had me by the head. She made sense. Her answers were organized. She had a plan for EVERYTHING, and her plans were detailed. Her platform was hefty – built with 4x4s. Then I saw the boys, the msm, and the DNC attacking her. It wasn’t the attacks as much as it was the way she TOOK it – she grabbed me by the heartstrings. I don’t think this happened with any men. I think it is wholly a female phenomenon. It doesn’t seem to matter whether you are straight or gay young or old black, white, Asian, Native American – she’s got you, and you want THIS woman to be POTUS. This woman is the one. You RESENT substitution.
Here, Hillary is a romantic figure. She’s a heroine in a drama we’ve all participated in. Here reside the sister-love, the girl crushes, female bonding – and it is only for Hillary. It refuses, resists transfer.
There may be other PUMA factions I have omitted, and some of these might break down further, but this is what I think I see at the bottom of the rifts. It’s like a bunch of tectonic plates shifting.
After a year, PUMA is going through another metamorphoses. This time last year I thought it might have a chance at becoming a party. It will never be more than a movement. It is not even really anchored in a party. The only other thing I think is clear is that it formed around Hillary and will not transfer whole to anyone else.
Meanwhile, I guess I’ll have to continue being an itch to the Palin people. No matter what they try to lay on us, she is no Hillary Rodham Clinton, and I am pissed at the “Hillary people” trying to tell me she is!
Hillary unlike obama and palin does not need an applause crew following her around. During the rallies and when Hillary won a primary she would say something that should be cheered or applauded and she would talk thru the applause to get to a new point/policy. I don’t think she realized to stop like most politicans and bask in the applause,she would rather talk policy and how to better the country. I agree 100% with you on the different factions of pumas. When puma first started I was behind it all the way. Then all of sudden everything was sexist and it was like different factions of puma were turning into obots and how they like to be potrayed as victims. I think all the stories of hillary being hidden are so the repubs can get a reaction out of hillary and bill they can be used by the media as an attack on obama. But hillary and bill are not recacting they are just working. All thru the general election and thru the first couple of months of hillary being sos repubs would say just wait hill and bill will make sure obama does not win or make his life hell and when they didn’t they got pissed and said they were weak and lost power. Repubs want hill and bill to do their dirty work for them, but they can’t just yet they need a majorty of the party behind them and they don’t have that right now. When hillary brought in sidney bleumthenal (sp?) that was a sign to be that no one will marginalize or hide her.
The puma loyalists are just waiting when hillary says obama sucks and I am running for president. I know that is what I am waiting for so the 18 million army can get ready. With Bill doing a fundraiser for maloney and more than likely campigan for stesak he is telling rahm and the dcn to go jump off a bridge and I love that. Unlike palin who has her party’s backing hillary does not and needs that. Right now it is hillary and bill with some dlc members against obama supporters,the far far left and the ones that know if hillary and bill get the power of the dnc back their screwed. Hillary has very nice lady parts, and I feel personally responsible to protect them since I cannot think of ONE of her lady parts that did not somehow suffer some kind of mean scrutiny during the primary season.
